Growing Basics
Pansies are cool-season annuals in Minnesota. They thrive in spring and early summer, then often struggle in peak heat before bouncing back in fall.
Sunlight: Full sun to part shade. Some afternoon shade actually helps them last longer into the summer.
Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil.
Transplanting: Very cold-hardy â plant them out several weeks before your last frost date. They can handle temps down into the low 20s°F once established.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during warmer spells.
Fertilization: Feed every 4â6 weeks with a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) to support continuous blooming.
Other Tips
Deadhead regularly to keep new flowers coming and prevent plants from going to seed too early.
The flowers are edible â beautiful candied or as a fresh garnish.
If plants get leggy or look exhausted in summer heat, cut them back partway. They may revive when cooler weather returns.
Great for containers, window boxes, and early-season color when not much else is blooming yet.
