Growing Basics
Coleus is an annual in Minnesota â it won't survive frost.
Sunlight: Part shade is ideal (2â4 hours of direct morning sun). Many varieties also handle full shade. In hot summer sun, leaf colors can wash out and edges may scorch.
Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained soil.
Transplanting: Plant after the last frost when nighttime temps are consistently above 50°F. Plant at the same depth as in the pot.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during hot spells. Don't let it dry out completely.
Fertilization: Feed every 4â6 weeks with a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) or use a slow-release granular at planting time.
Other Tips
Pinch off flower spikes as soon as they appear. Blooming redirects energy away from the colorful foliage.
Works great in containers, window boxes, or as a border plant in shaded beds.
Cuttings root easily in water â a fun way to overwinter a favorite variety indoors.
